Aluminium vs GRP Scaffold Towers: Which One Should You Choose?

Selecting the right scaffold tower is one of the most important decisions when working at height. Whether you're a professional contractor, maintenance engineer, facilities manager or homeowner tackling a renovation project, choosing the correct tower can improve safety, increase productivity and ensure compliance with workplace requirements.

One of the most common questions asked by customers is whether they should choose an aluminium scaffold tower or a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) scaffold tower. While both provide a stable and secure working platform, they are designed for different working environments and each has its own advantages.

In this guide, we'll compare aluminium and GRP scaffold towers in detail, covering their construction, benefits, applications, costs and safety considerations to help you choose the right solution for your project.

What Is an Aluminium Scaffold Tower?

Aluminium scaffold towers are the most widely used mobile access towers throughout the UK. Manufactured from high-strength aluminium tubing, they are designed to provide a lightweight yet exceptionally strong working platform for tasks carried out at height.

Their low weight makes them easy to transport, assemble and reposition, making them the preferred choice for builders, decorators, electricians, roofing contractors, maintenance engineers and DIY users.

Modern aluminium towers are manufactured to recognised industry standards and are designed to provide many years of reliable service when correctly maintained and inspected.

Advantages of Aluminium Scaffold Towers

Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre
Quick to assemble and dismantle
Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
Naturally corrosion resistant
Easy to transport between jobs
Lower purchase price than GRP towers
Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications
Widely available in various platform heights

Because aluminium towers are so versatile, they are the first choice for the majority of construction and maintenance work throughout the UK.

What Is a GRP Scaffold Tower?

GRP stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic, sometimes referred to as fibreglass. Instead of aluminium, the tower frames are manufactured using reinforced composite materials that provide excellent strength while remaining electrically non-conductive.

GRP scaffold towers are primarily designed for environments where users may be working close to live electrical equipment or electrical infrastructure.

Examples include:

Electrical contractors
Rail maintenance
Utility companies
Data centres
Airports
Power stations
Manufacturing facilities
Industrial maintenance

Because of their specialist construction, GRP towers are generally heavier and more expensive than aluminium towers, but they provide significant safety benefits when electrical hazards are present.

Key Differences Between Aluminium and GRP Towers

Although both tower types perform the same basic function, several important differences should be considered before making your purchase.

Weight

One of aluminium's biggest advantages is its lightweight construction.

A lighter tower means:

Easier transportation
Faster assembly
Less physical effort
Easier loading into vehicles
Quicker repositioning on site

GRP towers are noticeably heavier because of the fibreglass materials used in their construction. While this provides excellent durability, it also means they require more effort to move and erect.

Electrical Safety

This is the biggest difference between the two tower types.

Aluminium is an excellent electrical conductor.

For this reason, aluminium towers should never be used where there is a risk of contact with live electrical equipment or overhead power lines.

GRP towers are manufactured using electrically non-conductive materials, making them the preferred choice for electrical maintenance and utility work.

It is important to remember that even when using a GRP tower, normal electrical safety procedures, site risk assessments and safe systems of work must always be followed.

Durability

Both aluminium and GRP towers are extremely durable when properly maintained.

Aluminium naturally resists corrosion and performs exceptionally well in most working environments.

GRP also offers excellent resistance to corrosion, chemicals and harsh industrial conditions, making it particularly suitable for manufacturing plants, wastewater facilities and other demanding locations.

Cost

Aluminium scaffold towers are generally more affordable than GRP towers.

Because aluminium is easier to manufacture and remains the industry standard, purchase prices are typically lower.

GRP towers command a higher price due to the specialist composite materials used in their construction.

However, where electrical safety is essential, the additional investment is often justified.

Aluminium vs GRP Comparison

Feature	Aluminium Tower	GRP Tower
Weight	Lightweight	Heavier
Ease of Transport	Excellent	Good
Electrical Conductivity	Conductive	Non-conductive
Corrosion Resistance	Excellent	Excellent
Chemical Resistance	Good	Excellent
Purchase Cost	Lower	Higher
General Construction	Excellent	Good
Electrical Work	Not Recommended	Excellent
Maintenance	Low	Low

When Should You Choose an Aluminium Scaffold Tower?

An aluminium scaffold tower is usually the right choice if your work involves:

General building work
Property maintenance
Painting and decorating
Roofing
Window installation
Facilities management
Warehouse maintenance
DIY projects

Aluminium towers offer an excellent balance of strength, portability and affordability, making them the most popular option for everyday working at height.

When Should You Choose a GRP Scaffold Tower?

A GRP scaffold tower is recommended if your work regularly involves:

Electrical installations
Live switchgear
Power stations
Railway maintenance
Utility infrastructure
Airports
Data centres
Manufacturing plants

Where there is any possibility of electrical hazards, many employers specify GRP towers as part of their site safety requirements.

Which Tower Is Easier to Transport?

If your work requires travelling between multiple sites every day, aluminium towers offer a clear advantage.

Their lightweight construction makes loading, unloading and transporting significantly easier.

This reduces physical strain and often allows quicker assembly once you arrive on site.

GRP towers remain transportable but require more effort due to their increased weight.

Which Tower Requires Less Maintenance?

Both tower types require routine inspections before use.

Regular maintenance should include:

Checking braces for damage
Inspecting locking claws
Examining welds and joints
Checking platforms
Inspecting castors
Ensuring adjustable legs operate correctly

Damaged components should always be replaced with compatible replacement parts.

Routine maintenance not only improves safety but also extends the lifespan of your scaffold tower.

Are Aluminium Towers Safe?

Yes.

When correctly assembled and used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, aluminium scaffold towers provide an extremely safe working platform.

Always ensure:

The tower is erected on firm, level ground.
Brakes are applied before use.
Outriggers are fitted where required.
Platforms are correctly installed.
Guardrails are in place.
The tower is inspected before every use.

Are GRP Towers Completely Non-Conductive?

GRP towers are manufactured using non-conductive fibreglass materials, making them suitable for working near electrical installations.

However, no scaffold tower removes the need for proper planning and risk assessment.

Always follow current safety legislation, your employer's procedures and any site-specific requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which scaffold tower is best for builders?

For most builders and contractors, aluminium scaffold towers provide the ideal combination of strength, portability and value.

Why are GRP towers more expensive?

GRP towers use specialist composite materials that require a more complex manufacturing process.

Can GRP towers be used outdoors?

Yes. GRP scaffold towers are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Which tower lasts longer?

Both aluminium and GRP towers have long service lives when correctly maintained.

Are replacement parts available?

Yes. Individual braces, platforms, castors, adjustable legs and many other components can usually be replaced without purchasing a completely new tower.

Final Thoughts

Both aluminium and GRP scaffold towers offer safe, reliable access solutions when selected for the correct application.

For most construction, maintenance and property improvement projects, aluminium scaffold towers remain the preferred choice thanks to their lightweight design, excellent durability and competitive price.

However, where electrical hazards exist, GRP scaffold towers provide an additional level of protection and are often specified by employers and site managers.

Choosing the correct scaffold tower should always be based on your working environment, the tasks being carried out and the specific risks associated with the job.
