When working at relatively low heights, it can be tempting to assume that a ladder or basic set of steps is all that is required. However, even a fall from a relatively low level can cause serious injury.

For tradespeople, contractors, maintenance teams and facilities managers who regularly carry out low-level work, BS 8620 industrial podium steps provide a practical solution by combining a stable working platform with built-in side protection.

Podium steps are commonly used across construction sites, commercial buildings, warehouses, factories, schools, hospitals and maintenance environments. They are particularly useful when a worker needs to remain at height for longer periods or requires both hands to carry out the task.

At Leader Pro, we supply a range of professional Podium Steps designed for trade, construction and industrial applications.

In this guide, we explain what BS 8620 means, what a BS 8620 podium is designed to do, how podium steps differ from ladders and scaffold towers, and what to look for when choosing professional industrial podium steps.

What Is BS 8620?

BS 8620 is the British Standard covering a specific type of low-level work platform designed for use by one person.

The standard applies to low-level work platforms that have:

One working platform
Side protection around the working area
A maximum platform height of no more than 2.5 metres
A maximum working load of 150kg

BS 8620 also establishes requirements relating to areas including materials, dimensions, structural loads, strength, stability, marking and user instructions.

These low-level platforms are commonly known as:

Podium steps
Podiums
Low-level work platforms
Pulpits
Room scaffolds
Work podiums

For professional buyers, specifying equipment manufactured and tested to an appropriate standard provides far greater reassurance than simply purchasing access equipment based on appearance or price.

What Are Industrial Podium Steps?

Industrial podium steps are compact access platforms designed to provide a protected standing area for low-level work.

Rather than standing on a narrow ladder rung or conventional step, the operator stands on a larger working platform surrounded by guardrails or other side protection.

This provides a more substantial working position and can make podium steps particularly suitable for jobs where the operator needs to use tools, work with both hands or remain in position for an extended period.

Industrial podium steps are frequently manufactured from aluminium because it provides an excellent combination of strength, durability and manageable weight.

Professional models can also include features such as:

Enclosed guardrails
Self-closing access gates
Non-slip working platforms
Integral stabilisers
Lockable castors
Anti-surf devices
Adjustable platform positions

The exact configuration will depend on the manufacturer and podium model.

You can view our full range of industrial podium steps here.

Why Is BS 8620 Important?

The biggest difference between professional access equipment and inexpensive general-purpose equipment is often the level of engineering, testing and certification behind it.

BS 8620 establishes recognised requirements for low-level work platforms rather than leaving manufacturers to determine their own interpretation of what constitutes a safe podium.

The standard considers several important areas of design and performance, including:

Strength

A professional podium needs to withstand the forces it may reasonably experience during normal use.

This includes the weight of the operator together with tools and materials, subject to the platform's stated maximum load.

Stability

A work platform must remain sufficiently stable while being used correctly.

Stability is especially important when someone is moving around on the platform, using tools or applying force while working.

Side Protection

One of the defining characteristics of BS 8620 low-level work platforms is the provision of side protection around the working platform.

This helps reduce the risk of the user accidentally stepping or falling from the platform.

Access

The operator needs a safe and practical method of entering and leaving the working platform.

Professional podiums therefore typically incorporate designated access points rather than encouraging workers to climb over guardrails.

Product Information

BS 8620 also covers requirements relating to marking and manufacturer instructions.

This is important because even correctly designed equipment must still be assembled, inspected and used properly.

What Is the Maximum Platform Height for BS 8620?

BS 8620 covers low-level work platforms with a maximum working platform height not greater than 2.5 metres.

It is important to understand the difference between platform height and working height.

Platform height is the height of the surface the operator physically stands on.

Working height is an approximate indication of how high a person may be able to reach while standing on the platform.

For example, a podium with a 1.5 metre platform height could provide an approximate working height of around 3.5 metres depending on the height of the individual and the task being carried out.

When selecting access equipment, always work from the actual platform height required rather than relying solely on estimated working-height figures.

What Is the Maximum Load for a BS 8620 Podium?

BS 8620 specifies a maximum working load for this type of low-level work platform of 150kg.

The total load should include the operator together with any tools, equipment or materials being carried on the platform.

For example, if an operator weighs 100kg and carries 20kg of tools and equipment, the total platform load would be 120kg.

Never exceed the manufacturer's stated maximum load.

Podium Steps vs Ladders

Both ladders and podium steps have legitimate applications, but they are designed for different types of work.

A ladder may be perfectly appropriate for short-duration, low-risk tasks where suitable handholds can be maintained.

However, podium steps can provide advantages when work requires greater stability or a more substantial working area.

Podium Steps

Podium steps typically provide:

A larger standing platform
Side protection around the operator
A more enclosed working area
Greater freedom to use both hands
Better suitability for longer-duration work
Good stability when correctly deployed

Ladders

Ladders can provide:

Very quick access
Compact transportation
Easy storage
Access to a wide range of heights
A practical solution for suitable short-duration tasks

The correct equipment should always be selected following an assessment of the task and associated risks.

If your work involves repeated low-level access, browse our Podium Steps range to compare suitable options.

Podium Steps vs Scaffold Towers

Another common question is whether to use podium steps or a mobile scaffold tower.

Again, neither option is universally better. They serve different applications.

Choose Podium Steps When:

Podiums can be particularly useful for:

Low-level work
Internal maintenance
Electrical installation
Ceiling work
Decorating
Dry lining
Mechanical installation
Inspection work
Facilities maintenance
Repetitive tasks requiring frequent repositioning

Their compact size can make them easier to move through doorways, corridors and occupied buildings.

Choose a Scaffold Tower When:

A mobile scaffold tower may be more appropriate when:

Greater platform height is required
A larger working platform is needed
Work will take place at substantially greater heights
Larger quantities of tools or equipment need to be accommodated
The task requires a different access configuration

Mobile access towers fall under different standards from BS 8620 podiums, so it is important not to treat the two types of equipment as interchangeable.

What Are Podium Steps Used For?

Industrial podium steps are extremely versatile and can be found across a wide variety of industries.

Electrical Installation

Electricians frequently use podiums when installing:

Lighting
Cable trays
Fire alarm systems
CCTV
Data cabling
Electrical containment

A guarded platform can provide a stable position for work that may require both hands.

Painting and Decorating

Decorators can use podiums for:

Painting ceilings
Cutting in around ceiling edges
Preparing walls
Installing coving
Wallpapering
Commercial decorating

The larger working platform can be particularly useful where the operator needs to remain in one position for longer periods.

Mechanical and HVAC Work

Podium steps are commonly used when installing or maintaining:

Ducting
Pipework
Ventilation systems
Air-conditioning equipment
Ceiling-mounted services

Facilities Management

Maintenance teams frequently need quick access to relatively low-height equipment.

Typical applications include:

Changing lighting
Inspecting ceilings
Maintaining signage
Accessing sensors
Carrying out repairs
Routine building inspections

Construction and Fit-Out

Podiums are particularly popular during internal construction and fit-out work.

Applications can include:

Dry lining
Suspended ceilings
First and second fix work
Electrical installation
Mechanical installation
Decorating
Snagging

Their ability to move relatively easily between work areas can make them highly productive equipment on larger projects.

Why Podiums Can Be Better for Repetitive Work

One of the biggest benefits of podium steps becomes apparent when the same task needs to be repeated many times.

Consider an electrician installing dozens of ceiling lights along a commercial corridor.

Using a conventional ladder may require repeatedly climbing, positioning the body, carrying out the task, descending and repositioning.

A compact mobile podium provides a larger protected platform that can often be moved efficiently between working locations when unoccupied and set up correctly.

That can improve both comfort and productivity.

The same applies to:

Ceiling contractors
Decorators
Mechanical installers
Fire alarm engineers
Data installers
Facilities engineers

Collective Fall Protection

An important concept when selecting work-at-height equipment is the distinction between collective protection and personal protection.

Collective protection is equipment designed to protect the person without requiring them to take a specific action for the protection to work.

Guardrails are a common example.

A properly configured podium surrounds the operator with side protection while they are standing on the working platform.

That is one reason podiums have become such a common sight on professional construction and maintenance projects.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005

Using BS 8620 equipment does not remove the responsibilities created by the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Work at height should still be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people using appropriate equipment.

The general hierarchy is to:

Avoid work at height where reasonably practicable.
Prevent falls where work at height cannot be avoided.
Minimise the distance and consequences of a fall where the risk cannot be completely prevented.

Selecting suitable access equipment forms an important part of this process.

Do You Need Training to Use Podium Steps?

Training is an important part of safe work at height.

Users should understand how to:

Identify hazards
Select suitable equipment
Carry out pre-use inspections
Assemble equipment correctly
Position the podium safely
Use the podium correctly
Move and reposition the equipment
Dismantle and store it safely

Employers should ensure workers have sufficient instruction, information, training and competence for the equipment and work being undertaken.

Inspecting Industrial Podium Steps

Like all work-at-height equipment, podium steps should be inspected regularly and checked before use.

Before using a podium, check areas including:

Frames

Look for:

Bent sections
Cracks
Damaged welds
Significant dents
Corrosion
Missing components

Platform

Check that the working platform:

Is properly secured
Is not excessively worn
Has no serious damage
Provides suitable grip

Guardrails and Gates

Make sure:

Guardrails are correctly fitted
Gates operate correctly
Self-closing mechanisms function properly
Latches engage securely

Castors

If the podium uses wheels or castors:

Check for excessive wear
Ensure brakes operate correctly
Check wheels rotate normally
Confirm castors remain securely attached

Stabilisers

Where stabilisers are required:

Make sure they are fitted correctly
Check for damage
Position them according to the manufacturer's instructions

If there is any doubt about the condition of the podium, it should not be used until it has been inspected by a competent person.

Never Move a Podium While Someone Is Standing on It

A common mistake is attempting to move access equipment while the operator remains on the platform.

A podium should generally be vacated before it is repositioned.

Once moved to the new location, it should be correctly positioned, stabilised and secured before the operator climbs back onto the platform.

Always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions.

Use Podiums on Suitable Ground

The surface supporting the podium has a direct effect on stability.

Podiums should be positioned on suitable firm, level ground in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Before use, check for:

Sloping surfaces
Uneven flooring
Loose materials
Open floor penetrations
Soft ground
Temporary coverings
Cables or debris
Nearby edges

Extra consideration may also be required when working around:

Doorways
Vehicle routes
Pedestrian routes
Loading areas
Machinery
Excavations

Do Not Use Boxes or Steps on the Platform

If a podium does not provide sufficient working height, never place a box, stepladder or other object on the platform to gain additional height.

Doing so can place the user's centre of gravity above the position the podium was designed to accommodate and can effectively bypass the protection provided by its guardrails.

Instead, select access equipment with the correct platform height for the task.

Our Podium Steps category allows you to compare the available options and choose an appropriate platform height.

Do Not Overreach

Even when surrounded by guardrails, excessive reaching should be avoided.

The user should keep their body comfortably within the protected working area.

If you cannot reach the task safely, descend from the podium and reposition it.

Taking a few seconds to reposition the equipment is far safer than attempting to stretch beyond the intended working area.

Features to Look for When Buying Industrial Podium Steps

Not all podium steps are manufactured to the same standard.

For professional applications, consider the following.

BS 8620 Certification

If purchasing a low-level work platform for professional use, look for clear evidence that the podium has been tested and certified to BS 8620 where that standard is appropriate to the product.

Do not rely purely on marketing phrases such as "industrial quality" or "professional grade".

Independent Certification

Third-party certification can provide additional assurance that the product has been independently assessed.

Enclosed Guardrails

Side protection should provide a secure working area while still allowing practical access to the platform.

Self-Closing Access Gate

A self-closing gate helps prevent the access opening from accidentally being left unprotected once the operator enters the podium.

Large Non-Slip Platform

A substantial working platform provides more room for comfortable positioning and tools.

The surface should also provide appropriate grip.

Stabilisation

Suitable stabilisers can increase the effective footprint of the podium and improve stability.

Always install stabilisers where required by the manufacturer.

Industrial Aluminium Construction

High-quality aluminium podiums combine strength with relatively low overall weight.

For professional equipment that will be used regularly, construction quality is particularly important.

Replacement Parts

Check whether replacement parts are readily available.

Professional access equipment may remain in service for many years, and being able to replace castors, gates, braces and other components can significantly extend its useful life.
